CIVIL SERVICES EXAMS
WHAT IS IAS?
Indian Administrative Service (IAS) is one among the many civil services in India. Other civil services are Indian Police service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Revenue Services(IRS), Indian Railway Services (IRTS, IRAS, and IRPS), Indian Audit and Account Service (IAAS)etc. Civil Service Exam (CSE ) is conducted every year by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)of India.
WHY IAS?
An employment in the civil services is much more than an average white-collar job. By getting intothe civil services, you will be associated with the decision-making and implementation of public policies & programs of your country. Eligibility Criteria and Number of Attempts:
A graduate in any discipline may sit in the exam. A final year student can also sit. One should beat least of 21 year of age on 1st august of that particular year in which he/she wishes to appear the exam.
Pattern of Examination:
Civil service is a three stage exam. First stage is preliminary exam, second is main exam and third stage is interview. Preliminary exam is objective type and qualifying in nature. Candidates to the extent of almost 15 times of the notified vacancies pass the preliminary examination. Main exam is Descriptive in nature. Number of students passing the main exam are about 3times of the notified vacancies, and they are called for the interview.
(i) Preliminary exam
Paper 1- General studies 100 question, 200marks, 2 hour duration
Paper 2 -Aptitude test 80 question, 200 marks, 2hour duration (qualifying only)
NOTE: There is negative marking in preliminary exam.
(ii) Main Exam
Essay - Paper, 250 marks.
General studies- I (Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of world and society)-250 marks
General studies- II (Governance, Constitution, Polity, social justice and international relations)-250 marks
General studies- III (Technology, Economic Development ,Bio Diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management)- 250 marks
General studies- IV( Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude)-250 marks
Optional ---, Paper 1, 250 marks
Optional ---, Paper 2, 250 marks
NOTE: Duration of Main exam is 3 hour for each paper.
(iii) Interview
At interview stage, candidates between two to three-fold of the vacancies are called to appear
before the UPSC Boards at Delhi. Interview carries 275 marks. Interview calls are sent on the
basis of marks obtained in the Mains examination.
Selection
The overall ranking is done based on the sum total of Mains and Interview performance.
Therefore, the total marks involved in the ranking are 2075. Candidates are allotted
various services keeping in view their respective ranks in the examination and preferences given
by them in their Main Application Form.
Admissions open for civil services
1. GENERAL STUDIES(PRE-CUM-MAINS) – 6-8 Months.
2 CSAT - 5 Months
3 PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION - 5 Months
4. LAW-6 Months
